David Clavier is a founder of Kiersten’s Ride and serves as Vice President of the non-profit.
He has lived in Northern Michigan since 1987. David attended college at Lake State University and received his Associates Degree in Engineering Design Technology from Kirtland College.
Clavier enjoys hunting, fishing, and family.
Karen Burks, Secretary
Karen is an Accounts Payable Specialist at Grandvue Medical Care Facility. Previous to Grandvue, she was employed at Fifth Third Bank in the Private Bank Wealth Management Services for 18+ years. To fulfill her love to travel, Karen also worked as a Flight Attendant for Northwest Airlines for 6 years. Karen has been a Board Member with Kiersten’s Ride since 2015 and is trained in SafeTALK and Yellow Ribbon. Karen, and her husband Jeff, have two children, Sami and Ty, whom attend East Jordan Middle/High School. She enjoys gardening, cooking, traveling and camping with family and friend
Dawn Burks, Treasurer
Dawn Burks has a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting from Lake Superior State University with a Master’s in Business Administration from Central Michigan University. She has over 20 years’ experience in accounting and tax preparation. Since 2010, she has worked at Great Lakes Energy serving in various roles of responsibility: Process Accountant, Payroll Supervisor, and currently as the Regulatory and Financial Analysis Manager. Dawn enjoys volunteering her time and accounting services to local organizations. In addition to being a member of the Kiersten’s Ride Board, she is also a member on the Miss East Jordan Scholarship Pageant Board and the East Jordan Public School Board. In her spare time, she enjoys camping, biking, and playing softball, but most of all, she enjoys spending time with her family.
Jacob Duncan
Jacob Duncan is the Deputy Treasurer for the City of Boyne City. He holds a degree in Business Administration from North Central Michigan College and is a graduate of the Leadership Charlevoix County Class (LCC) of 2025.
Jacob’s passion for mental health advocacy grew during his time in the LCC program, where he and his classmates partnered with Kiersten’s Ride to launch a countywide campaign aimed at connecting people with suicide prevention and mental health resources called “Hope on the Move”
He’s also actively involved at his local church, where he helps lead the production of Church Online and connecting others to the ministry.
In his free time, Jacob enjoys photography, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Dr. Michael Lucido
Dr. Michael Lucido has a Doctorate in clinical psychology with Masters degrees in child psychology and psychopharmacology. He has practiced in Detroit and northern Michigan community mental health systems for the past 14 years. Since 2016, he has been practicing as a clinical psychologist at Munson Charlevoix hospital and Boyne Area Medical center. He specializes in autism, OCD, depression, trauma, cognitive behavioral therapy, and biofeedback. His wife, Dr. Makowski, is a dentist in Charlevoix, their daughter Carmela is a kindergartener at St. Mary’s, and their dog named Circe is a regular visitor at their dental practice.
Trooper Corey Hebner
Trooper Corey Hebner is a Community Services Trooper from the Gaylord Post. The Post covers Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, and Otsego counties. Tpr. Hebner’s role is to work with civic groups and create public awareness and education on behalf of the Gaylord Post. He has been a State Trooper for the past 25 years and has served the citizens of Michigan at the Petoskey, Detroit, Newberry, St. Ignace, and Gaylord Posts. Corey lives in Harbor Springs with his wife Joan. They have two adult sons, Kyle and Derek, who both attend college. Corey enjoys coaching hockey and baseball in his spare time.
Amber Southerton
Amber Southerton, LMSW has a Masters Degree in Social Work from Grand Valley State University. She specializes in working with children and currently provides therapy to children preschool through 6th grade at East Jordan Elementary School through the E3 program at the Health Department of Northwest Michigan. She also provides support to mothers in the region through a therapeutic group called Mom Power. She has worked in the field for over 15 years with a passion for mental health advocacy, prevention, and holistic wellness for people of all ages.
Amber and her husband, Bryan, live in Petoskey with their son Calvin, 2 dogs, and 3 chickens!
Crystal Hass
Crystal Hass, after high school went to get Certified as a Horse Farrier, then continued on to get a License in massage therapy and currently managing her family owned Campground where she get to work with her two kiddos enjoying the outdoors everyday.
When she’s not at work, she loves to go horseback riding, boating, two-tracking, fishing, and going up to their cabin with their dogs and just spending time with her husband, daughter and son!
Youth Advisors
Youth advisory representatives give the Kiersten’s Ride board the “youth perspective”. They are working together on a peer project to promote mental well-being and resource connections for those in need.
Denise Shea, Veteran’s Rep
Denise Shea is the Veteran Representative for Kiersten’s Ride. She grew up in East Jordan, Michigan. Upon graduating high school, she attended Lake Superior State University for 2 years and then joined the United States Air Force. During her 25 year of military service, she served in a variety of Intelligence, Personnel, and Special Duty assignments in Hawaii, Nevada, South Korea, Germany, Iraq, Italy, and Colorado. She also deployed in support of Operations DECISIVE ENDEAVOR, ALLIED FORCE, IRAQI FREEDOM, and ENDURING FREEDOM.
Denise earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Hawaii Pacific University and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Counseling (focus: high school) from the University of Phoenix as well as a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling & Leadership from the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Upon retirement, Denise decided to move back to Northern Michigan and now resides in Gaylord. She currently volunteers for several organization in the Gaylord community and is a registered Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and safeTALK trainer.
Matthew Whitley
Matthew Whitley is a member of the Clinical Quality team with Munson Healthcare. Some of his previous roles include working as a Human Resource assistant, event specialist, bookkeeper and B2B Wholesale Coordinator.
